This watercolor painting is about a H’mong woman resting on the rice terraces during her working day.
For this painting, I focused on describing the details of her head scarf and her clothes. The background has been simplified and blurred to focus on the main subject.
The artwork was displayed at the Watercolor Exhibition at Sailom Art Studio in Vientiane, Laos, in 2025. The exhibition displayed watercolor paintings by artists from 3 countries, including Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Farewell

The painting “Farewell” introduces you to a tradition of making betel nut chewing. This practice is common in Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar. It is known for its stimulant and narcotic effects.
The artwork captured the whole process from cutting areca nuts, adding slaked lime, to wrapping everything in a betel leaf.
I took the reference photo for this painting at my grandma’s funeral. The three women in the paintings were her friends. They were making the betel nut chewing for the guests who came to visit my grandma the last time. They told the stories of my grandma when she was still alive and the memories they had with her. It’s a special moment in my life, and I’m happy that I painted it.
The painting was displayed at the Fabriano in Acquarello exhibitions in Italy and the US in 2024.

We often chase after youth and flawless beauty, fearing wrinkles, gray hair, and aging skin. But what if we shifted our perspective?
This is a portrait I painted of a Vietnamese 96-year-old grandma. Her skin carries black spots and deep wrinkles. Her teeth are black, not from decay, but from an old Vietnamese tradition—black teeth were once a symbol of beauty and elegance. Her hair is white and thin, her hands rough and veined. And yet, to me, she is stunning.
Every wrinkle tells a story. Every sunspot speaks of a life lived under the sun—working, loving, caring. Her hands have carried children, cooked countless meals, and held generations. She’s lived nearly a century, and it shows—in the most beautiful way.
We can’t stop the passage of time, but we can choose how we see it. Aging is not something to fear or hide. It’s a testament to strength, resilience, and the quiet beauty of a life well lived.

The artwork is about two H’mong women walking and chatting on the road home from the Sunday market. Traditionally, H’mong people only had one Sunday market open for people to trade goods, socialize, and showcase their traditional attire and handicrafts.
The background is a landscape of the mountains, rice terraces, and villages in Northern Vietnam.
I saw these women on a rainy day on a road trip I took back in 2015. I was young and free, and had no idea that one day I would become an artist.
The painting was displayed at the International Watercolor Exhibition in Australia in 2024.

H’mong batik is a traditional fabric dyeing technique of the H’mong people. Skillful H’mong women use beeswax to draw patterns on linen fabric, then dye it with natural indigo from plants. After that, they boil the dyed fabric in hot water to remove the wax. The final result is a beautiful indigo-colored fabric with elegant patterns.
On a trip to Sapa in Northern Vietnam, I had a chance to learn more about the H’mong batik and saw a grandma teaching her granddaughter how to draw the patterns. I took a photo of them and later painted them with watercolor.
